“If we are going to talk about Tottenham winning the title, then Chelsea are right in the mix. If Spurs can win it, then for sure, Chelsea can win it”. Those were the words of Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson regarding Chelsea potential of winning the League.
“You can make an argument that it’s as strong a squad as anyone in the Premier League” – Jamie Carragher on Chelsea squad.
When Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich decided to appoint Frank Lampard as the next manager of Chelsea FC, he probably knew there was no other better candidate than Frank. Chelsea lost their talismanic figure in person of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid in a deal worth 100m (£89m) for the playmaker, though bonus payments could see Chelsea receive at least another £60m from the sale of the player. The Belgian scored 110 goals in
352 games for The Blues after joining from Lille in 2012.
Losing a player of such calibre with a transfer ban made it a huge task for any new manager. On July 4, 2019, Frank Lampard was appointed as Chelsea manager and his words were “Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we have shared”. He was joined by his assistant, Judy Morris and first-team coach Chris Jones. Frank had to use the Chelsea academy graduates and the senior players in the squad. So the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori were called into the first team.
Playing top flight football in a league like the English Premier League is not an easy task for even an experienced player talkless of young players. They all did well and secured Champions League football.
The season ended and Chelsea spent big in the transfer window after there ban was reduced by Court of Arbitration for Sport’s signing players like Timo Werner from RB Lepizig(£45m), Edouard Mendy from Rennes(£22m), Ben Chilwell from Leicester City(£50m), Hakim Ziyech from Ajax(£33.4m), Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen(£75.8m) and Thiago Silva from UEFA Champions League finalist, Paris Saint-Germain(Free).
Chelsea squad depth is unbelievable. They have a total of 33 players this season and most of all these players will definitely first team player of other teams. Rotation will be quite easy for Frank unlike other teams and the quality of these players are not in doubt when fully fit. Imagine taking off Hakim Ziyech and bringing on Christian Pulisic and the latter eventually scored a goal, is there any manager who won’t want that? This shows the squad depth Chelsea possesses.
So far, Chelsea have scored 25 goals in EPL with THIRTEEN different goalscorers in the EPL already, no other team have reached double figure in this present campaign. They have conceded 12 goals with difference of 13 goals. Chelsea major problem last season was the defence as they shipped in 54 goals and had just 9 cleansheets but with the introduction of Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy, they have been solid at the back. Kurt Zouma is the leading goalscorer among defenders in the League with four goals to his name already. He has completed 863 passes, won 42 aerial battles, 53 clearances and 12 interceptions behind Kante(30) and Mount(13) within the Chelsea squad. Zouma has improved tremendously and obviously that’s due to the fact that he’s playing alongside Thiago.
Frank will have to ensure that he has a fully fit squad and maintain his players fitness. Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech are unavailable with Christian Pulisic not fully fit. Chelsea felt their absence in their lost to Everton at Goodison Park. Though Frank was able to call on Havertz to play on the wing but it’s obvious he’s not comfortable playing there. Frank had to play either Mount or Havertz in that wing role but he opted to play Havertz on the wing and Mount to play the number 8 role in the midfield and he was fantastic. He could have scored at least two goals but he hit the crossbar twice with one of them coming from a sublime freekick.
Frank will be expected to make the top four again this season if not higher than that. This present Chelsea team is expected to score lot of goals and so far they have been doing so with 25 goals in the EPL already and 13 different scorers. That shouldn’t come as a surprise as they possess lot of attacking players. Timo Werner is expected to lead the line while Tammy Abraham is expected to provide competition meanwhile old guard, Olivier Giroud is putting up a tough fight as he has scored seven goals in 13 games already with him scoring four against Sevilla in the Champions League.
Anyway, the season is still at the early stage. If Frank wants to achieve big this campaign both in the EPL or UCL, he need to ensure his players are fully fit. The goals should also keep coming and with 13 different goalscorers, it’s likely for the number to increase and it also shows that Frank’s side can score from any angle. The defensive department lead by Cesar Azpilicueta who has recently lost his place to another academy graduate, Reece James, will also have to remain very strong and solid.
